The Wave Sharpener

Double Sided Dia-Sharp Fine/Extra-Fine
Having sharp woodturning tools can make all the difference in your woodturning experience! In particular, having a very sharp skew chisel is essential! For me, I enjoy having all my tools just as sharp as I can get them and creating good sharpening habits help keep my tools razor sharp.
With this said, I don’t particularly like having to step away from the lathe to sharpen my tools. I keep my grinder close to the lathe and I know the grinder is only a couple of steps away but stepping away distracts me from the work piece on the lathe and that is my focus. What I was looking for is a honing method of sharpening that is Fast, Easy and Clean while allowing me to remain at the lathe.
Above is a 6” DMT sharpening stone. With this sharpening stone I am able to hone my skew and other tools exactly how I want Fast, Easy and Cleanly while allowing me to remain at the lathe. Let me tell you how.
I have a piece of Plexiglas that I acquired at at my local home improvement store. I have laid a DMT Non Skid Matt on the Plexiglas ( I am going to give you a FREE Non Skid Matt with every double sided stone purchase). I simply place the Plexiglas with the sharpening stone right on the lathe bed ways and leaving it there till I am finished with the project so I can return to the sharpening stone as needed. The sharpening stone has non skid rubber matt to prevent it from moving on the ways. The stone sliding on the ways won’t be a factor because you will only be using minimal pressure against the stone.
Because the stone is laying flat on the ways you only have to handle the tool itself rather then handling the tool and the stone. If the mistake is made of rolling over a tool edge while honing then it really means it is back to the grinder to establish that initial edge! Holding a stone in one hand and your tool in the other hand, for me, raises the risk of rolling over that edge. However, placing the DMT Sharpening Stone on the lathe bed ways then handling only the tool is so much easier and helps ensure that you will not roll the edge of your tool. Also, if you notice the sharpening stone is not in your way when you get back to work on your project!
This particular sharpening stone is really nice because not only does it have a fine 600 mesh side that brings a very keen edge to your tool but the stone also has a very fine 1200 mesh surface on the opposite side of the stone that just about polishes your tool. So once you work the 600 mesh side, you simply flip the sharpening stone over and work the very fine 1200 mesh side of the stone. This really creates a superior honed tool and you simply have to try it to believe the edge you will acquire on your tools using this very simple method of honing!
With this DMT sharpening stone… no water or lubrication is required but I do suggest just a few drops of water and I really like that because it means that everything stays clean as you hone your Skew, Bedan, Beading and Parting Tool, Parting Tool, Gouges or any of your turning tools.
In conclusion, this sharpening stone allows you to hone your turning tools Fast, Easy, Cleanly while remaining right at your lathe.
